da Vinci Surgical System

At Ob Gyn specialists of the Palm Beaches we pride ourselves on our ability to treat many different conditions. When medication and non-invasive procedures are unable to relieve symptoms, surgery remains a most effective treatment. We would like to introduce you to a new tool in our arsenal, the laparoscopic da Vinci robotic surgical system.

Traditional open gynecologic surgery uses a large incision and has for many years been the standard approach to many gynecologic procedures. With this approach can come significant pain, trauma, a long recovery process and increased risk to surrounding organs and nerves. For women facing open surgery, the length of time they experience postoperative pain, the extended time away from work and altering their normal daily activities can cause significant anxiety. These anxieties often result in patients delaying the decision to proceed with their needed surgery or avoiding it all together.

Fortunately, we have less invasive options now available. Over the last 10 years laparoscopic surgical techniques have been advancing to allow more complex procedures to be completed laproscopically. The newest and most effective tool is the da Vinci® Surgical System. This system allows complex hysterectomies, hysterectomies involving a large uterus up to 24 or 26 week size and even large myomectomies to be completed through 3 to 5 one cm incisions. The system allows for greater precision and control, and it minimizes risk of injury and pain. Many patients only require Ibuprophen for pain relief after they are discharged from the hospital. It rapidly increases the rate of recovery with the hospital stays being less than 20 hours, and it returns most patients to their normal daily activities in less than 14 days.

Here at OB GYN Specialists of the Palm Beaches we have four surgeons that specialize in the use of the robotic system. We use the da Vinci system for both benign and cancerous conditions and for urinary incontinence and prolapse procedures as well as advanced lysis of adhesion and advanced myomectomies. With this system, we have made traditional open surgery almost obsolete in gynecological surgery.
